My heath robinson 4 point headset using reflective tape works like a dream, just needs a strong light source next to the web cam.

With version 2.0 of Freetrack I have now succedeeded in making it work with:

Live For Speed - no problems
Lock On - no problems, although didn't work with 1.1 for me
Armed Assault - no problem, couldn't make 1.1 work

Don't forget you need to minimize Freetrack before starting the game up!

No success with FS2004 or FSX yet, anyone got these working?  What's the trick?

Nice one, quality stuff.

Neil.

Thanks for the feedback.

You didn't remove the webcam's IR filter?
What sort of light source?

They use special head tracking interfaces which are not supported in Freetrack v2.0. FSX should be working in the next release.

No, webcam is exactly as standard, it's an old Philips Vesta Pro PCVC680K.
I've put it on top of my monitor, and stood my desk lamp next to it - again just a standard bulb, an 11w philips low energy bulb I think.

The headset has four rounded reflectors on it made using reflective tape from Halfords and it works perfectly, no IR at all, all visible light.  Due to the strong light source next to the camera you can increase the shutter speed on the camera so that the only thing visible is the reflective strips.  You do end up with a light shining in your face though!

Really looking forward to seeing that working!

Yes, the reflective material will reflect IR as well as visible light.

If you have a strong IR source then that should work as well.  I also have a camera that has 6 IR LEDs around the lens and it does work, but the return is not as strong as a normal light bulb, I think 6 LEDs is not enough to illuminate the scene brightly - perhaps with the IR filter on the camera removed it would work better.

It might be that normal lamp has more almost visible "red" light (infrared near visible light) in the spectrum. This "normal lamp infrared" is not cutted out by the camera IR filter and therefore it works better than the real infrared light source.
