This is my first time soldering stuff together and playing around with electronic, I was wondering if there was any step by step guide for noobs like myself.
Also not being able to find a USB power adapter, I dug up an old Motorola charger, it reads ''Output 6,4V=200mA'' is this good for the LEDs or too much/too little. Also one of the wires is completely black while the other is black and has some beige lines on it in small intervals, is the pure black one always the grounding? |

Usually the positive wire is a solid colour (black/red) and the negative wire is white/blue, or could have a stripe on it.
6.4V charger is ok. Have look around in the forum and decide what kind of mount you will go for. How to wire. (You don't need a fuse when using a charger.) Use the LED assembly wizard to find out what resistore you need.

That LED assembly wizard says I need either a 26Ohm resistor or a 47 (1.3 / 1.9 forward voltage according to Google on the SFH485 no idea why it has two values) one.
When I was out a few days ago I only got 2 10Ohm ones following the stickied diagrams so when I first came home I tried only one of them with one diode to see if it works, when it didn't I made this topic so now I tried to switch it about in case I got the + and - on the charger wrong, but the diode still doesnt appear to be shining, sorry if I sound like a complete retard but did I use too small a resistance for the one diode and fry it? Can you fry a diode? Or a resistor? Maybe wiring it - to + screwed them up. How can I tell if the diode is working? |

Hi,
the forward voltage for the SFH485 is 1.5V. According to the assembling wizard (6.4V unregulated power supply) you can use one 47 or 51 ohm resistor for a three LED mount in series. If you used the 10ohm resistor with 6.7V and one LED you probably fired up your sfh485 So either you get a 51 (47) ohm resistor or you look up for a cheap USB charger, (You can get them for less than 8€), to use the 10ohm. For testing the SFH485 you need to be in a dark room, as you cannot see infra red light with your eyes. You just will see a light red glimmer, this is the visible red part of light, they emit. Or you check them in front of your webcam. |
