I'm planing to build the IR Led Clip, but in the country where I live this model SFH485P, is not available to order.
They offered me some alternatives saying that those LEDs are similar with that model, however I am with no electronics experience or whatsoever to make the choice. Here are the models they offered me with a link below of their datasheet: How can I know which model is compatible, or which model is best to order and that it will work with the Freetrack software? SFH203PFA http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/siemens/SFH217F.pdf SFH309 http://www.stanford.edu/class/ee122/Parts_Info/datasheets/sfh309.pdf LD721 ftp://ftp.dca.fee.unicamp.br/pub/docs/ea079/datasheet/ld271.pdf TSUS5402 http://www.vishay.com/docs/81056/tsus5400.pdf Thank you

Hi,
I think you have to take this one.http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/siemens/SFH217F.pdf This one has 75 degrees angle and the SFH485P has 80.Thats not such a big difference. Those other have around 25 degrees angle. And those other three have round tops. Most of the time you need to flatten/file them for better tracking. Iam sure it will work in freetrack. Now you have to decide what model you want to use. Fil in the right model dimensions, do some tweaking and have more fun playing you game. And don't forget to use the led assembly wizzard http://www.free-track.net/english/hardware/calcled/ for the right resistor. greetz Stormrider |

Thank you Stormrider I will try those and when I build the thing I will post my feedback.
Another thing I noticed is that the forward current is not shown in the diode datasheet. Does that means that I have to estimate my own forward current that will be less then the forward voltage?

Hi,
SFH203PFA and SFH309 are photo-diodes, not emitters, so they don't works for a mount. LED271 and TSUSS5402 are ok. You have to file them down eventually. |

I don't get it now. So you want to tell me that I can't use the SFH203PFA diodes?

No, these are photodiodes kind of light-detectors. They don't emit ir-light.
The last ones are Ir-LEDs. Where do you come from? Do you have the possibility to order from EU (Farnel, Conrad)? |

I live in Europe, i think I can order from Conard. Thanks for pointing me out :). I just made an account there. On the search i can find two types of SFH485P diodes: https://www.conrad.com/ce/en/Search.html?search=SFH485P Which one to choose? From the tutorials here I assume I should order the flat headed one? ----------------- Edit: Nope.. It doesn't pay off for me to order from them. I ordered 6 diodes and 3 resistor for approximate price of ~5EU. But the shipping is +40eu which makes almost 50EUs total. I guess I'll have to go and to try with whatever diodes are available here. Perhaps a little trial and error will go along the way. When I'm done I will post results here for other poor souls like me which can't buy the appropriate equipment from their country

Hi,
Thanks Steph for correcting me.I've read the part " They offered me some alternatives saying that those LEDs are similar with that model" but I missed the part in the datasheet "Silicon PIN PHOTOdiode".The shop gave you some wrong alternatives and I didn't see it Sorry Spirit986 that I have confused you. And again Steph, thanks for correcting me. Those flat ones are the ones I use. Thats something I know for sure, that they work good with Freetrack But €50,00?? They can put them in a postcard ansd send it.Are you realy sure it costs that much for shipping? greetz Stormrider

Yup, here is the final checkout:
Good thing thou, thanks for giving me the idea of asking them if they can sent me the diodes in a postcard

Hi,
I saw that for a few countries they ask more for shipping. I just don't understand why there is so big difference in shippingcosts. I wish you luck. greetz Stormrider |

@Stormrider
No problem, I've got my problems too with this electronic stuff. @Spirit986 if you can get some of this LED271 and TSUSS5402 it will be ok. 50€ is really heavy, don't know why.... What about Farnell? |

The Farnell website didn't had my country either. I managed to cheat the system by placing a neighbor country. I've done this before and it usually works since the shipment ends at my home sooner or later. However the they don't accept orders for less then £20. Dead end again.
I will use some of the other diodes if I had too. A friend of mine told me that he saw a Conrad shop in the neighbor town so it is worth going to check if I find the diodes there. If nothing else I will still use what IR emmiters I have here. Again I must ask what did you meant in the post #4 when you said:

I know that this isn't related to this topic but I didn't know where to ask elsewhere. I just bought a Logitec C300 Camera and I made some photos on how to remove the IR Filter. Where can I make the guide and post that on the website?
Will it do If a made another forum post on that topic or there is a separate part for that?

These two LEDs got a beam angle of +-25° (and +-22° for the TSUSS5402). The SFH485p2 got +-40°. With +-25° you will be limited in your head-movements. When filing them down you can easily increase the beam angle. Like this: Some fine sandpaper will do the job. There are filter removal guides for the C120 and C200 which are similar to the C300. Just make a thread in "Support: Tracking system" will be all right. |
