Hello,
I am wondering to create my own tool to use FreeTrack, and I have some troubling questions regarding this system: Correct me if I am wrong. There are two options to create this kind of system. 6DOF I. Webcam and IR emmiters. 1. Normal webcam (remove IR filter) and aplly some light filter on camera. 2. Create hat with 3 LED IR Emmiters (with wide angle) 3. Use FreeTrack Software II. Webcam with IR LED. 1. Webcam with IR LED and light filter on camera. 2. Create Hat with IR reflective stickers. 3. Use FreeTrack software. Currentlly I am in the middle of creating the first option, but I have found hard to find appropriate IR emmiters. LED OSRAM SFH485P 5mm is availale in UK and cost of transport is much higher than IR LED itself. I have found different IR emmiter with simillar wave lenght and 120 degrees angle (instead od 150 degrees in OSRAM LED). I am still waiting for delivery. I hope it will work. Cam used : Microsoft VX 6000 I am also wondering about testing the second method. It will be just a matter of finding appropriate camera with IR LED and material which reflects IR. This method seems look like cheeper and easier. If any can tell me which method is more efficent. Please, if you have any comments or if there is any mistake in this message please post it here. Thank You GB |

Hi, and welcome to our forum !
The first option is good ! IR Led must have 80° or more wide angle to work correctly with freetrack ! 5mm of diameter is the best ! the Second option is not the best ....

Thank You
As I suspected - the solution with IR emmiters is better. As soon I will finish it. I will write about results. Can you tell me how can I aplly this system in FSX ? Is there any option I should enable in FSX or FreeTrack ? |

My own device is almost finished.
System is up and running http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzY8Aa2lt9I I am still working on case which will be 100% carbon fiber and recharging system via USB. Many of my friends asked me if they can buy freetrack device somewhere, I have looked but found nothing interesting. I was just wondering if I could produce and sell this kind of device. Is it legal ? |

I think you are probably better off using the emitters than reflectors. You will have trouble getting the same intensity out of reflectors. The other problem is having high intensity IR shining in your face constantly is probably not good for your eyes and they will have to be pretty bright to get reflectors to function properly.
I heard quite a few people wanting reflectors instead of emitters on the clip side of things but I really don't see the issue unless you are that against the use of batteries. Get rechargables if it is that big of an issue. The wight is really not a factor. I use a 9v batter with a 150ohm resister and 3 LEDs and my system works great. The battery lasts a really long time too as the LED don't use much juice at tall. I am thinking about trying a Wii remote though as this seems to be the ultimate hardware solution right now but my system works so lovely I don't really have a need to go for the Wii right now. I am using a Microsoft vx1000 with 3 high intensity red LEDs. As far as IL-2 is concerned I could not ask for more after getting the software tweaked properly, it is just awesome. |
