I'm sure this would bring my PC to its knees, but I would like to combine FreeTrack head tracking with NVIDIA stereoscopic shutter tech and get some sweet 3D action going on. To avoid looking like a COMPLETE tool, I would want to put the IR tracking LEDs on the glasses themself.
My question is: Neither the hat nor the headset clip model seem to be able to support a configuration on the glasses. Is there a way to significantly modify one of the models to fit an array on the glasses? Also, any suggestions on placement of the LEDs to avoid the dreaded perpendicular plane that the lights would end up in? Has anyone else tried this? Matt |

Hi Matt,
I've been using shutter glasses with Freetrack for about a year now. It's a killer combination. I'm not sure how you'd go about integrating the IR LEDS into the glasses themselves. Because you'd need to have the middle LED raised above the frame of the glasses, I suspect there'd by no way around looking like a tool if you were to go this route. The best solution I've seen, and the way I've gone, is to thread the LEDS into the lining of the baseball cap. I bought my ready-to-use cap off of Marcus White. Unfortunately, he seems to have ripped quite a few people off and has been absent from these forums for a very long time. There have been around here who have taken the same approach though, and have come up with very functional, discreet-looking caps. Since you don't want to be the Antichrist of Vogue (not sure why, isn't that the point? :P), you could try the clip configuration. That way the points can be in the same horizontal plane across the frame of the glasses and there are no perpendicular plane problems. However it seems the clip is intended to be vertical as you have to place your camera sideways to get it to work. You then need to swap yaw with pitch and x with y.

Also... I don't really mind looking like a tool myself (you're right, it must be one of the goals of this kind of thing) but I'm more thinking of anyone I try to convince to try it out.
I also don't really like wearing hats. Also, I will not lie, I am thinking about widespread use of this tech- hopefully coming to consoles this gen or next. If you could could consolidate the equipment into a sexy pair of glasses... You just don't get pitch very well with the perpendicular planar issue, right? Maybe it's a worthy sacrifice... |

Flight Simulator 2004, but mostly FSX for the past few months. The Freetrack/glasses combo is great for bringing out the detail in high-quality virtual cockpits, and the depth perception the glasses give you really comes in handy when you're on final.

I have an idea. I know this wouldn't work under the cap or clip model, so it would involve some participation from the developers:
5 point glasses: 2 on the lower part of the frame 1 on the bridge 2 on the temples. I think one temple should always be in view, even if both won't always be visible. It would give you at least one more point not in the perpendicular plane. What do you think? (and yes, this is mostly because I don't want to wear a hat) |

I think you can stay with the 3-point model, but you can use your version by omiting the two on one side. Then, just position the camera on one uppper corner of the monitor, so it can see all 3 points even if you turn your head. Of course, the issue is how far you will turn your head.
I suspect that people who use the program for its main use, for panning control, may turn their head more than those who want to use it for virtual reality type head tracking. So, I don't know if my suggestion really addresses the needs of the "pan" people. Joe Dunfee |
