The clip looks easier to make since it's just 3 LEDs on the same vertical plane, but I'm wondering if the cap will have any advantages or disadvantages with how well it usually performs.

I think the Cap is technically beter because it tends to have a larger tracking plane, if a cap will have LED's spaced out over 10cm while a clip only has 6cm.
But like you said, the clip is easier to assemble, I personally don;t favor wearing a cap to a computer, seems odd to me.
A problem with the clip is that sometimes LED's become obscured by your head when you turn, this can be fixed by mounting it forward a little, but just a note with my experiences.

I am building a cap because I use external speakers, never a headphones. Point being, even if I make the clip, I have to clip it to....... a cap!

So yeah, if you're comfortable with wearing a cap, then by all means, go ahead. It's more of a preference really, if it doesn't matter, then Cap > Clip
