Thanks nadrealista and benmeijer. I think I can afford the extra GBP 0.50 for the metal ones!
It looks as though Farnell has a minimum order of £20 unless you have a trade account or corporate payment card. I may have to get the components elsewhere

Got a question about the PTC fuse for the USB design. Since we are only using 50mA for the LEDs and the maximum current is 100mA (SFH485P), can I use a PTC fuse with hold current of 50mA and trip current of 100mA? (as opposed to the 200mA hold and 300mA trip mentioned in the guide on page 2 of this thread)

You can use a PTC fuse with 50 mA hold / 100 mA trip. Only if you use a 10 ohm resistor / 5V power.
If you use a 6.8 ohm resistor/ 5V power (current = 70mA) choose an other one with higher "hold" values.
Rule for PTC:
I (hold) >= Total current in assembly of your build
I (trip) < max. 300 mA

ah thx. which current do most people use? perhaps i can add a 3 way switch to toggle between off, 50mA, and 70mA?

The more current you use, the led's are brighter. Depends on your webcam sensitivity. I use a WiiMote / with 50 mA current.
Be the first to build a tracking device with a variable brightness.
If you planning to build this, check the values of the PTC! |

You can use those wires. Current and voltage are too small to be an issue.

Use a lower value than 250 mA

will hold current of 100 mA , trips (cut off) above 200 mA.
250 mA should be the max. |

Hello everyone, I'm new here.
And I am mad as hell right now, because since like a week now I've been trying to build my own 3 LED Cap. Somehow it just wont work.
I'm using the SFH485P IR-LEDs and I followed the very good instructions in this thread to the point. My resistors are 33 Ohm, 5% and my Powersupply is a regulated 3V ...well powersupply. I also tried 6V and even up to 12V. Nothing happens.
So what did I do wrong? 
It can't be that hard, can it?
Please guys help me out, I'm desperate right now!

EDIT: For my powersupply I'm using a plug which is also used in headphones.

If you're afraid to destroy your motherbord, use external power like telephone adaptor or usb power charger.
I assume you want to use the usb / mouse cable for wiring the leds, yes you can.
@ Racefreak : have you checked your build with a digital camera? ...... IR light is invisible for your eyes, just like a remote control.
Are you're sure you have the right resistors .... not 33 kilo-ohm? you've checked the long leg of the led is on the negative side. I hope you don't destroy them using 12 V.
