VIMICRO 301 - Cheapest webcam around?

Posted Image

OTHER NOTES
-Has 6x IR LEDs fitted, but they only seem to trigger in low light. I think you'd need a high exposure setting (= low framerate) to use them for a passive setup (reflective tape) though - probably unworkable.

thx Staylo, I was interested to buy an ir webcam, but I need to know a few things:
- if the ir leds starts working automatically or manually with a controller(or software)

- if the webcam sees the reflective tape bright in a distance between 50 and 80cm

If this could be possible, the building of a trackclip or helmet will be really much more simple.

I now see that the LEDs on the camera are controlled by a photoresistor through a hole in the top of the camera - tape over this hole and the LEDs are always on!

I don't have any very reflective tape, but using white electrical tape I was able to get the tape to appear noticably brighter than my head at 50cm only at the best angle... I think it should work with good tape, but I cannot say for sure.

(The LEDs appear very bright through my mobile phone camera, but that is subjective!)

This is what I want to hear!

So, we can say almost for sure that every kind of ir webcam could works with a photoresistor.

For the reflective tape...I'm sure u got a pair of nike, reebok, adidas or similar with a reflective parts.....or even some football short.

I cut a piece of reflective tape in my orange reflective jacket, present in the security car kit

Once u find it, would be great to make a test with this kind of tracking.

A little curiosity: the webcam ir bought on ebay cames from China?

I have an Asus Laptop.

Processor      Intel Core Duo T7300 2Ghz
Ram               2Gb
Video Card     Nvidia GeForce 8600m GS (256Mb)

The Built in DMax STK1135 video camera gave poor output, 4fps, the head in fretrack would not even move.

Tried other ceneras in the house but could not install so i bit the bullet and bought the Trust WB-1400t as many people recomended.

Big difference, the system works a treat.  Getting 8 to 18 FPS, needs a lot of tweaking, but the head now moves fluidly and the system works well in FS2004.

Great product.  Thanks guys.

Hello!

Do You think the 6 led webcam (which is sold in lots of name in my country too) can be modified to disable the leds?

I think altrough my eyes can not see it, it is not so healthy to have 6 high beam infrared lightsources in front of our eyes. I would use 3 or 4 led clips instead.

It's completely safe, no more dangerous than the IR radiation from a light bulb.

Short-circuit the photoresistor and the leds will stay off.

_Genius - Webcam VIDEOCAM MESSENGER

-Price: 17€

-30 fps (data) at 320*240 but 43-48 in freetrack.

-The best tracking is with the ir filter removed and a magnetic disk from a floppy filter. With a photo film i have reflect and a lot of light, with 2 film it's blur.

-Video of the ir led as seen by the moded webcam.

I use a 1 dot led and as you can see in the video it's not very smouth and same in il-2 but it's playable. Perhaps the configuration is not good?

And thank you freetrack team for this software.  :)

There is excessive motion blur in that video, it's definitely not 30fps. Judging by your webcam settings, automatic exposure seems to be enabled, and the checkbox is grey, so you can't disable it.

If you want to post more info, I suggest creating a separate thread.

Finally I could manage to buy this one:

A4Tech pk-35n

Posted Image

Price I paid: ~23 $

Great picture quality, manual settings are working perfectly.
Freetrack performance (ir modded): constantly 29-30 fps, jitter: 2

This webcam is small as a thumb. The clip is suitable for screens that has maximum 15mm thickness. Mostly for notebooks, but somehow it could be modified to attach to thicker screens too.

I would NOT recommend Creative Live! Cam Vista IM. Very low FPS in dark environment, that cannot be improved by options settings (that is a small number of in drivers settings). Shame.
