-Cannot disable automatic exposure.  Camera automatically re-enables automatic exposure after turning off. This causes camera to only perform at 7 FPS.

QuickCam Home from Logitech works (with XP, no Vista drivers available).

I'm getting 26-28 fps, at 340x288.  It's great!  AutoExposure can be disabled.

Removing the IR filter is doable, but the lens assembly has 3-4 minuscule components that can easily be dropped out of proper positioning.  So, it is a bit tricky to remove the IR filter.  Fortunately, I got my IR filter out, and got the camera back together with no problem.

I bought a MS VX3000 but it gave me issues with the sofware on 3 different PC's ... with and without the driver disc. It seems the latest drivers don't work or something.

I returned that and got a Logitech Quickcam E1000 and it worked perfectly. I had to smash out the infrared filter though as it was glued in between to plastic pieces.

Q-tek 300 Webcam - impossible to get the IR Filter out, you can do it by smashing but you will damage the glass of the webcam itself...

Attempted to use Trust WB-1400T .. had no end of problems. Couldn't get an FPS above 12, and it is very hard to remove the IR filter (indeed, I tried, failed and wrecked the camera).

Can't recommend this for use with free track.

Hi everyone,

I'm desparate to try this freetrack business... :)

I've looked at all the options and wondered what your opinions are on this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/6-LED-5-PIXEL-USB-2-0-CAMERA-MIC-WEBCAM-FOR-LAPTOP-PC_W0QQitemZ180428761238QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_WSJL_Wholesale_GL?hash=item2a02646896

I thought this looked ideal for use with reflective spots... Has anyone else tried this webcam?

While I'm on the subject, those of you who are using reflectors rather than LEDs, what reflective material are you using for best effect?

Anyway, good to be here, Let me know what you think! :)

MSI StarCam Clip

+ Very easy IR modding, looks good, small.

* Can disable autoexposure, works quite well when set up.

- Crappy drivers: sometimes crash to bluescreen on start (WinXP)
- Resets values and must be set up again everytime.
- Clip can't attach on thicker LCD as my HP L2245w, but works as stand.

Runs at 26-28 FPS at 352x288

It has 3 leds so can be used for reflective marker setup, but work only at night that way.
Basicaly, cam seems to be ok, just the drivers are a bit annoying.

Edit: Last time i got bluescreen it was followed by blackscreen for several restarts, I cut power at power supply and let it rest a while and then it came to life again (phew!!!). Not sure if it is drivers or some HW problem with my particular piece of camera, but i guess I will go for VX-1000, which seem to be well tested by freetrack community.

Gembird CAM44U  - real crap (for our freetrack purpose). Works perfectly in Win XP preview window (20-25fps), but sucks in Freetrack (v.2.2). What you say about 1 frame per minute or so? Got completle chineese drivers in standard package :(. Autoexposure ON/OFF.

http://www.sven.ua/ru/products/detail.php?SECTION_ID=760&ID=31038
Sven I-730C - fine for skype. Nothing else. No need to remove IR filter. Autoexposure deadly ON. That's why in Freetrack (v.2.2) fps only 5. "Enabler" produce no effect.

Looking further for something cheap and fast. :D

For the Logitech QuickCam Communicate do you have to remove the IR filter if you want to use IR lights? Also if I wanted to block visible light could I just cover the lense of the webcam with the magnetic tape from a floppy disk or do I have to open it up?

30FPS
High Resolution
Supports I420 codec

Works like a charm with freetrack, both with regular LED's and with IR LEDS. IR filter is removable although tricky. Guide for removing IR filter will be made and uploaded.

Having now the Microsoft VX-1000, I can say nothing but words of praise.

30FPS no jitter (Im using 352x288)
A easy to mod as Microstar Clip.
No HW/SW problems.
Has much better stand/clip than MS Clip.

No problem whatsoever with 30mA  SFH485 (not P, the 20° filled flat) with reception in any light conditions (modded, brightness 20, exposure 0).

1, no need to switch-off autoexposure. When autoexposure is enabled, you will have around 20 FPS wich, at least for me, is good enough (Im using it mainly in FSX).

Interesting thing is that on my system, I didn't need enabler and didn't have to uncheck the autoexposure. Yet it stays at 0 anyway having nice 30FPS all the day. Good for me as Im rather dogfighter. ;)

3,  When you remove IR filter, wich is very easy (it was actually much more dificult to get inside camera :o), why the hell you dont put a piece of floppy disk on the place instead of that IR filter that you just pulled out? (I saw some horrible pictures of ugly raped VX-1000 with parts of floppy glued from outside in front of the lens). I just cutted same size of floppy as IR filter was and carefuly putted four little drops of instant glue to the corners of that floppy piece and then dropped it on right place... voila. Miracle. They will probably accept my camera in the store and refund my money back if I decide to return it :-D

True, but you do not even have to glue it. If you cut a piece of floppy that match in size well, you just put it there (exactly same way I did it in MS Clip).
