Hi,

after reading about the MSI StarCam 370i and looking around a bit I decided to get a MSI StarCam Racer.

It has mostly the same properties as the 370i (no IR Filter, 30 fps @ 640x480)
The "Racing Helmet" design has a great feature: the visor works as a visible light filter (only tested with the black color version).

Sadly the auto exposure activates every time the capturing starts and randomly while capturing (seems to be triggered by aiming the ir-leds directly at the camera) instantly dropping to 5 fps (deactivating auto exposure after this needs a trick: cover the lens, set to lowest exposure setting, uncover the lens slowly increase exposure).

Has anyone used a MSI cam under win vista x64 and can tell me if this is a driver problem?

Creative WebCam NX Pro

RGB 24, 320x240
30 fps

IR filter can be removed.

For methods how to remove the IR filter I would recomendate: http://www.flickr.com/photos/motenay/show/with/411225332/

Just open the small triangular caseparts with a screwdriver. Remove the outside focus wheel.

Do the same thing very cautious with the front plate (maybe remove the screws before, but this is very difficult, they are very small cross recess screws).

Then simply unscrew the optics. No screws have to be removed for this, just turn the optics in the opening direction for some rotations and then the optic block will plopp out.

The IR filtre is encased in the plastic. It is located on the side of the optics block that is nearest to the ccd chip. With a dremel or proxxon or something like this you can remove some of the plastic to get access to the IR filtre. When it is removed everything can be reassemblied just fine.

PS3Eye

I just bought a PS3Eye for use with FreeTrack. Free Track clocks it steadily at 30 FPS with 0 JPS. The camera work great without removing the IR filter.
It runs at 640x480=30fps. I am using red-led for tracking.
Great, very smooth.

Please use this driver as adviced in other thread. I am using WinXP.

Alex Popovich's driver doesn't work.
This driver supports 640x480=60 and 320x480=120fps, however doesn't work with freetrack.

Hope future version of freetrack will support PS3Eye @ 640x480=60 and 320x480=120fps.

XBOX 360 Xbox Live web cam

seems to work pritty good 30-fps, 0-Jitter. All green and it dose a great job of picking up min 1 pixle and filtering out all background light with ease under full Fluro light, Low quality image, smooth, output appears to be in black and white.

Believe it or not my good webcam was only giving me 8-fps so i swaped it out for the xbox cam. Good move i rek'n.

I tried using my Nokia N95 through USB in Mobiola as a webcam, unfortunately it came through at 15 f/s. Interesting idea though, does anyone know of any other software that would allow capture at higher f/s? It maxed out at 15 regardless of the resolution i set, or if i used the front or back camera.

Originally I was going to give it a try with my DSE XH5096 webcam (Dicksmith Electronics -- Australian Brand) unfortunately they don't make any drivers for Vista. That includes the entire family of OV519 chips... oh, well. I was considering buying a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 - AUD$99.

I'll let you know how it goes...
Cheers,
Evan

Pixo AW-I1130

Easy to take off ir filter.
Doesn't need a  light filter.
Works great.
Fast.
You can change it all the way to 1.3mp.
Payed 15 bucks for it at Fry's Electronics.

I just learned today that the Microsoft Lifecam vx2000 does NOT work. You cant open it up to remove the IR filter and no manual focus. It also will barely detect the IR LED's.

2. 30 FPS , 0 JPS  - 352x288,  RGB24, IYUV.

3. Easy removed IR filter.

Posted Image

4. Low CPU usage ~ 5%.

5. PRICE - Very old camera, very low price, FREE - for me.

6. I420 compression - not support.

7. Field of view -  54°.

8. 352x288 resolution - support.

9. Works well with IR LED.

I Play with FREETRACK v2.2 - TDU, GRID, LOCK ON, 18 Wheels of Steel - Haulin - every daytime.

Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000 important update

I saw few posts about freetracking VX-1000 and here is what I discovered by myself:

1, no need to switch-off autoexposure. When autoexposure is enabled, you will have around 20 FPS wich, at least for me, is good enough (Im using it mainly in FSX).

2, you can have 640 x 480 resolution and framerate is not affected!!! So Im running 640 @ 20 FPS with AE turned on. CPU usage max. 5 pct. on quad core Phenom 9550 (2.2 GHz).

3,  When you remove IR filter, wich is very easy (it was actually much more dificult to get inside camera :o), why the hell you dont put a piece of floppy disk on the place instead of that IR filter that you just pulled out? (I saw some horrible pictures of ugly raped VX-1000 with parts of floppy glued from outside in front of the lens). I just cutted same size of floppy as IR filter was and carefuly putted four little drops of instant glue to the corners of that floppy piece and then dropped it on right place... voila. Miracle. They will probably accept my camera in the store and refund my money back if I decide to return it :-D

4, do not buy VX-3000. I do not have experience with this one, but, VX-1000 is cheaper and works very well so there is no need to spend money for nothing...

And now, anyone can start arguing that 20 FPS is not enough. Go ahead :o)
