Hello, I just learned about FreeTrack a few days ago and here I am attempting to build my own tracker!
I went to OfficeMax, picked me up a Microsoft VX-1000, took out the IR filter, destroyed a floppy, cut and taped pieces to the front of the VX-1000's lens. No problems there! I used to do electronics as a hobby, so the circuitry was no problem. I decided to recycle 3x infrared LEDs from remote controls and to use a linear power supply (9.6vdc @ 200mA, 36 ohms resistor with 3x LEDs in serial) and attached everything to my headphones. The problem is, I think is the way I mounted them to my headphones (duct tape, wired together with speaker wire) and the headphone design. I'm using MoreMe Studio Deluxe headphones and I did no measuring of distance between the LEDs at all. The problem is, when I turn my head, the testing model in FreeTrack does all sorts of crazy motions I could never do with my own head. It's inaccurate and very sensitive to motions and it is probably due to how I mounted it, unless I missed something else. Can I get recommendations on how to mount the LEDs (I should probably get flat 5mm LEDs to get a wider field of light) on these headphones in a 3 point system to where it tracks accurately? I would prefer to mount them on headphones instead of a hat but with the 3 tier system/hat system (Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell ) as I don't own any hats and wearing these headphones with a hat would be strange and uncomfortable... Thanks in advance, FreeTrack is a great project and piece of software and I've got to give you kudos, to the community, and hopefully I can join and actually get the advantage in dogfights now. |

I decided to update since I have made some modifications and I was a little vague.
First of all, I realized I was using the Clip model instead of the Hat model for tracking. Doh! After remounting my LEDs closer together, picking the correct model for tracking, I have very good results but there are still problems. FreeTrack tracks X, Y, and Z movement of my head pretty much perfectly. Roll is perfect and yaw is alright. The problem is when I use yaw and pitch at the same time. Pitch (looking up and down) just refuses to work properly. I am thinking perhaps the top LED needs to be mounted more forward/backward? At this point, I'm stuck. |

Look at my headphone mounted set up (in the gallery).I made the side emitters well forward amd the top one a little back. This seems to work well for me.
