First off, I spent about six months studying electrical engineer at school but it happened years ago and the little I learned during that time is more or less forgotten. However I still remember some about electronics but this is not one of those things...

So my question is that have I gotten my calculations right if I use USB to power these LEDs http://www.led1.de/shop/product_info.php?pName=led-5mm-infrared-8mw-10-pcs-p-413 and use 3 220R resistors to give about 16 mA to each LED?

Off line Www

Viewing Angle: 20°
It's too bad to have a good tracking !
Look for LED IR or not ... with 65° or better, 80° of viewing angle...

... and this LED is ultraviolett. Does this work? I think around 880nm is good, but not 405nm.

hehe hello wody

You must have taken a wrong page , the link points to an infrared led, thats ok.

2 things :

- As babasior said , 20° beam angle is too narrow, you'll either have to choose another model or papersand your led case to increase beam angle.

- 940 isn't the best wavelength, 880nm is better

Well, after I removed the IR filter from my webcam, I've had absolutely zero problems with these LEDs. Papersanded the tops to flat and I would highly recommend these LEDs to anyone willing to do some modding for webcam. The tracking is flawless! B)
