Ok, I have assembled my 3 point clip (pictures soon) and have been trying to set it up.
For some reason when I click on 'Start' the image from the webcam (logitech Quickcam) is red and not black. I've fiddled with the sliders in the webcam settings but it never goes black.
Is this a common problem or am I doing something wrong?

You have probably selected the "l420" webcam mode

In FreeTrack go to  the "Cam" section and clic on the "stream" button. You'll see a new panel, select another mode e.g. "rgb24"

Ah yes, now the screen is black.......but the leds are not showing up very well. :(
Maybe it's the lights in the room? Oh and FreeTrack is now crashing.

I assume that you're using those LEDs from led1.de

http://www.led1.de/shop/product_info.php?pName=led-5mm-infrared-8mw-10-pcs-p-413

With these, I have kind of similar problem that LEDs are not showing too well. Sanded the tops to flat and so on but think these LEDs need an IR modded webcam. Gonna try that tomorrow and report the results

Oh, and what it comes to that stream, l420 seems to be the better one. Or at least with my Logitech IM it is

Hello willeyedoney, Mdds

@mdds, willeyedoney :

I confirm, i've already noticed 940nm IR leds don't show up that well on some webcams , unless you modify the cam.

(I had that kind of problem  :angry: )

If you can find a 880nm Ir led , it should work much better.

Or modify the webcam  :p , of course

@willeyedoney :

Your setup seems really well done , and should perform great.
If you still experience angle problems, you can sand your leds a bit more.
If you look at a sfh485 , the case is flat just on top of the chip inside the led.

greetings

I set the webcam to l420 mode and it's working ok now, apart from having to sit in the dark :) Does FreeTrack work in a lit room because I can't get it to see just the leds if I have the lights on.

I think I will have to  modify the webcam or get some better leds (yes I got those ones from led.de) I have some wide angle red ones that I bought when I got these IR ones. Maybe they would work better?

Unfortunately my PC (XP2200+, ATI9600XT, 1.5gb) is just not good enough to run FreeTrack and play online. I can use it offline but online I am lucky to get 3fps. :(

Hehe, actually I also have sit in the dark room to get these LEDs work properly :p

I'm fairly certain that after IR mod, I can use Freetrack even with the lights on but I'm gonna test it tomorrow and report my findings here

But if you don't want to mod your webcam then I suggest you to use those wide angle red LEDs. They should work just fine. I just hate the fact about those color LEDs that they reflect on screen

Hello WillEyedOney :

Here's my setup :

- 4 leds cap , using 940nm out-of-the-shelf self-sanded absolutely-noname Ir leds  ^^
- Microsoft VX1000 webcam, IR modded to allow the webcam to perceive the leds
- Leds are operating at about 15mA, if I remember correctly.
- 1 piece of radiographic sheet in front of the webcam to cut out visible light

With this setting, i have a ROCK SOLID tracking whatever the lighting of the room, from dark to sunlight.

The only thing , i don't have a window in sight of the cam, this helps a lot , i think.

I already told it somewhere else in the forum (cant remember where  :pigekedal: ),  IR leds + IR modded webcam + visible light filter = killer setup

@mdds :

if you mod the webcam , then LED.DE's IR leds are fine, no need to use red leds and get reflections on screen....

In game , or in freetrack capture window ???

If its in game , you should check your game settings , freetrack only has a low impact on game FPS.

If its in FT capture window, you should check for other programs try to access the webcam concurently to FT (like MSN and so on), and shut them down prior to use FT.

With your PC setup , you should get FT to work with your games.

It's online, I can get Freetrack to work offline (though I still need to sort out the issues with lighting) but as soon as I go online to fly I get 3/4fps (normally I get 15\20). I think it's the cpu which is just not man enough to handle FT and IL2 online.

You should never have to sit in the dark, if you use the recommended SFH485P leds operating at 100mA you can use Freetrack with an unmodded webcam in a wide variety of lighting conditions (with an IR pass filter of course).

You shouldn't be losing that much fps with your comp specs!
How much cpu is Freetrack and the System process using  while tracking?

Well, actually that sitting in the dark isn't enough. I also have to take off my eyeglasses 'cause the lenses are reflecting light from the screen! :p

But getting those SFH485P LEDs with reasonible price in my case seems pretty much impossible. I've gone through several online electronical components stores but to get all the components I need, I have to order the needed parts from at least two different stores. Thats roughly about 20 euros from shipping costs only! :(

Kind of funny that ordering from Germany is free and it takes only 2-3 days to get the package from there into my mailbox

With FreeTrack running minimised I get 3% usage for the FreeTrack process and 25% usage for the System process.
My computer can't take a big hit like that and run IL2 online.

Some Logitech webcams have a reputation for excessive cpu usage like this. Is yours one of the cheaper ones?

It shouldn't have that much impact though, I vaguely recall other people with similar specs using FT fine with IL2 online.

It's a Logitech Quickcam Messenger, not sure if that's one of the 'cheap' ones or not. :)
I thought cheap webcams worked better than the expensive ones?
