Hi,
I'd like to build a Free Track setup. I've been reading a lot about compatible and recommend webcams, but still can't decide. Anyway, I read that the FPS is very important, and the PS3 Eye has the highest I have seen and it's fairly cheap. Should I get it? Is removing the IR filter essential? How is it compared to Microsoft VX3000 and Logitech E3500/E2500, which were both recommended in the compatibility list? |

Ps3eye is the real way, the others camera can do maximum 30fps, and the eye will do up to 120fps, (actually 100fps in freetrack), resulting in a smoother tracking.
Ir filter in ps3 can sometime be impossible to remove, but I guess one can use an "eye" with ir filter ina darker room, away from direct exposure to ir sources(i.e. a bulb light, etc), apart from teh ir leds of the tracker, of corse |

I use also this cam and i don´t removed the filter. The only modification i do is to mount a piece of negative film in front of the lens. Thats it. For my case it works very fine. And its not necessary to destroy the cam.

OK, I've got my PS3 Eye now.
I don't know what LEDs to get for an IR clip or how to even get an object of the shape of those clips that fits to headphones, but anyway, where exactly should the negative film be put? Inside the camera and in front of the lens, or is it also OK OUTSIDE the camera? Also, what is a negative film? :\ Edit: OK, figured that out. Will a floppy disk work as well?

Yonyz, if you use a floppy, probably you'll need to remove the IR filter of the cam, because the floppy is thicker vhs tape. The problem with the tape is, as you probably noticed, one "strip" dont cover the cam aperture...

@yonyz
Here is an example of a negative film http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/10030841/2/istockphoto_10030841-negative-film-strips.jpg I just put it in front of the lens. The basic shape is like an circle with some longer "arms" which you can bend around the lenscover. Then you can fix it with an tape. At first i used an piece of floppy disc but it was too dark and i was not able to adjust it in freetrack-software. With the negative film it works very well. |

So a negative film is the film used with those old, non-digital still cameras? Is this what I need to buy?

yes. One needs to expose the film to the light (daylight), so the film will became black ("exposed").

Can I ask which LEDs you're using and at what output to get it working with the ps3 eye without removing the IR filter? I have 3 SFH485 LEDS in series with 4 AAA bateeries and a 20 ohm resistor and they are barely being detected unless they're within a few cm of the webcam ( with a piece of floppy disk as a filter on the lens). Is there any other tweaking required?

yes...First remove the floppy disk from the lens, and then manualy adjust exposure and gain settings of the cam from the freetrack interface to have live feedback while you wear the clip with leds on, untill you'll see in the cam only the "light" of the leds. Be aware not to have behind you any powerful source of light (ie: a bulb light, neon, window etc).
One may also play with the threshold settin from freetrack main window to set the dimension of the led blobs (as seen by the cam) |

I'm going to pick up my TrackClip Pro from the post office in Sunday. I will post with the results then. I still haven't got a film yet though, so I don't know about that...
Guess I'll just turn off the light for now, until I get a film. |

Guys, exposed film must be color or b/w? They have different color & transparency.
I bought ps3eye only 2 days ago, i don't want 2 broke warranty yet (2 weeks as min) Before sony, i used logitech c510 (just covered lens by magenta film from anaglyph stereo googles). It worked as i expect (2-3 points from 5)- no bright light must be turned on, window with closed curtains. I don't know is there IR filter anyway. Covering ps3eye by film from googles was not help, then i made circle from diskette film, that was helpfull, but freetrack become to loose my leds in very little angle of turn of the head (yaw/pitch). Would removing of IR filter of eye solve this problem, i even don't know ... I decided to try photo films before dissasembly. PS sorry for poor english

Aviators: The point of using a negative film is to block visible light. That is, if you use a film, you can have light in your room, as long as it's not IR light.
a1adin: The Wii remote runs at 100FPS, while the PS3 Eye runs at 125 FPS at 320x240, and 75 FPS at 640x480. I don't know what resolution is preferred. Anyway, the Wii remote requires a USB Bluetooth dongle and a proper software. These cost money. Also, the Wii remote itself is more expensive that a PS3 Eye, from what I know. As for my experience so far: I did buy a color film and exposed it to light. However, the IR leds of the TrackClip Pro do NOT penetrate it. I do not know why, so I'm still only using FreeTrack in complete darkness. |
