Hey guys,

I've got myself some 5mm IR LEDs from Deal Extreme, but I can't find any specifications for them, like the forward voltage and forward current, and therefore am unable to properly build the head tracking setup. If anyone knows where I can find the specs for these LEDs please let me know. The webpage is here: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2399

These led's are quite dim at 1.5 volts and run at their normal brightness at about 1.75 volts.
These led's run at 100ma best.
I Current tested 200 and they do vary, so you'll want to match them by current draw.
They run fine at 100ma but if glued to a curcuit board they'll run more.
1.5v = 30-40ma
1.6v = 45-57ma
1.7v = 65-82ma
1.8v = 90-115ma
1.9v = 112-140ma
2.0v = 136-170ma
2.1v = 152-190ma
2.2v = 169-212ma
2.3v = 188-235ma
2.4v = 200-260ma Max brightness for pulse operation



I found this in comments. People asked for specs in 2008. Seller promised and never get it :)

Try it with 1.65V for 50mA.

i have made a track clip with these leds...


1,9V 18mA
that's don't work ! led light is not detected on my wiimote, and when i try in the black and without the ir filter, i can see they are too little viewing angle and intensity

there ar sheeper but there are also a bullshit...


i precise that i have test these led before with a laboratory stabilized alimentation for finding specification of these leds.


maybe i have do an error, i'll retry but without high hopes. i don't understand why there is many great comments on DX...

now, my feedback about these leds...

this is the result of my test:

start: 1,3V 10mA
1,4V 20mA
1,5V 60mA
1,6V 90mA
1,7V 140mA
1,8V 180mA
1,9V 220mA
2V 250mA
2,1V 290mA
2,2V 320mA
2,3V 340mA
2,4V 340mA
2,5V 340mA
up to 4V progressive decrease to 0mA


2,1V seem to be the max voltage.
i recommend using 1,9V. it's better if you dont want burn them.

after2,1V luminosity don't increase. after 2,3V , the luminosity decrease... the led is burning.


for my track clip i'm using a wiimote with these leds. 3 in serial on usb. approximately 1,7V per led, 120mA  of total, without using resistance.
it's suffisent bu if you can apply a tenson of 1,9V or 2V per led (total power of 5,7 or 6V) it can bee really great !

but caution ! viewing angle of these leds is really short ! you must file them for having the same aspect as SFH485P

caution, don't file the junction insidde the led.

finally, these leds are the sheaper choice for building a freetrack !
