just wondering about newer webcams, the compatability list is woefully out of date...
i hear good things about the vx 1000 microsoft cam, but now you can get the vx 3000 for dirt cheap too...think the newest version is the vx 6000! so as far as low cpu usage webcams, which have you guys found to be the best? also field of view is an issue, but im mostly concerned with lowering the load on my cpu.... |

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I've never encountered a webcam that would've eaten more than few % points of resources. My guess would be that the problem is in the drivers, not the hardware. Maybe your webcam installs additional processes that take unnecessary cpu time? (I heard something about snapdetect processes)
Oh and for the record, I use Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 and I only get 1-3% jump in the cpu usage. But if you google around, you'll see that some people have managed to get 100% usage with this webcam. All the more reason to think that it's about flawed drivers/software rather than hardware. Also the cpu hit might be linked to the RightLight (tm) -type of software that evaluates the image stream and adjusts the controls to get the "best" picture out of your webcam. If your inteded usage is Freetrack, then you're going to disable these features anyways. |

i havnt even bothered thinking about wii...i wanna keep costs down and im strictly pc gamer.
as for drivers, ive tried different ones on my cam and they either just dont work, or it gets worse. im running bare bones capture..amscap or whatever. cams ir modded, and still draws about 17%. ok my pc is a bit older, ive only 2,1ghz of cpu resource to use and thats enough for IL-2...just. i read a post here that the vx 1000 was drawing about 3 % on an athlon xp, ao thats a heck of alot better than 17%... |

I just got the vx-1000 and set it up with a floppy covering the lense
here are my settings and the cpu usage as recorded through task manager this is an amd brisbane 5000+ OC'd at 2700 each and 2 gigs of RAM XP32 sitting idle with nothing running, easy 0% with the odd 1% blip my freetrack settings (cant seem to get the exposure on 0 was shining a bright LED on it) running 352x288 was gettin 6-10% (max) cpu usage running 320x240 seemed to be a bit better 3-7% (max) camera settings
