Hi Michael,
I had the same problem the first time I started 2.2.279. I fixed it by re-picking my tracking device (in my case 3 point clip) in the menu group "Model". As soon as I did that the tracking was reaquired.
BTW, I'm happy to report that with 2.2.279 all issues I've had in the past with FT have been fixed. I now get constant 30 fps and zero jitters. Plus, the camera properties window is now the correct size and I can adjust all settings.
I'm using a TrackClip Pro with a MS VX1000 cam.
Anyway, hope to have helped with your tracking problem.

2. I get 3 dots even when i choose "single point" in the "model" menu group

Make sure that you have selected your camera in the pull down menu (bellow the three moving dots)....it sounds to me that you are playing freetrack demo
